We had an absolutely beautiful day for our Annual SJU Hockey Golf Outing last Friday. A special thanks to Kristi Dostal and all of those people at the Monticello Country Club that helped out. We had a great course, great food and a great time! There were 117 friends of Johnnie Hockey that showed up to play golf and another 10 that joined the group for dinner for a total of 127 people. This is the best turnout that we have had in the eight years that I have ran the outing. This year was a record year for sponsorships, raising well over $10,000 alone. We did all of this while missing some regular groups that had to miss due to weddings and family events. My goal for next year is to sell out the tournament with 140 golfers.
I wanted to give a special thanks to St. Cloud Orthopedic for their lead sponsorship. It is always great to have such a respected company in Central Minnesota be a part of our event. I would also like to recognize Patti Lindberg (Edina Realty) and Eric Olson (Class of ’85) for their All-American Sponsorship. These sponsorships go a very long way in improving the overall experience of our student-athletes here at SJU. Another question that came up at the golf outing was how to get SJU Hockey apparel. You can order hockey apparel online through the link below. A portion of anything bought online will go back to our hockey program. I have been told that the apparel items on this site run a little small for the sizes, so I would encourage you to order with this in mind. If you are interested in this opportunity, please order by September 9th as that is when the site will close and all orders will be processed and sent out. Adidas and Big Athletic provide a great, quality product that you will be happy with.
Now time to think about hockey and our season. An exciting update is that all of our freshmen showed up for orientation and we are ready to get things going. We will be meeting as a team on Wednesday night to go over some Athlete-to-Athlete training regarding alcohol, tobacco and drug use, as well as discuss sexual harassment and the impact that decisions can make on your life. On Friday night, we will meet to discuss captain’s practice, equipment, leadership, strength program, expectations and guidelines, and anything else important to someone that wants to play hockey at SJU.
Our first day on the ice will be October 17th. We will have a few days of tryouts before we start preparing for our first game against Gustavus on Friday, October 28th.
